The wily bassist has made his name leading mid-sized ensembles; his writing can seem both simple and complex at the same time. But the pliability he brings to the stand in JD Allen’s threesome has a distinction to it as well: There’s a lot more agility and heavy lifting needed in a smaller outfit. Allen’s tumultuous tenor is the foil on this cozy gig and, though a drummer hadn’t been decided upon at deadline, August has a pocketful of key percussionists ever ready to lift the bandstand.
