SURF’S UP (IN ARMS)

by

What is POPO? The Chinese word for “grandmother,” for one. Also, a colloquial for “police,” should you pop your double Abercrombie collars and mainline Jäger. Neither of these seem to apply to the band, whose loosely hewn surf-pop is as gleefully, stupidly shambolic as it is dissonant. Whatever the construct, whether there’s any point to it (and it’s debatable), they’re enjoying the dirty journey and so are we; they open a Bowery bill that also brings Woods, Real Estate, and those other fuzzed-out, chaotic, beach-rock singsong carnies, Wavves. Sound the alarm.
