If you’re a true cocktail enthusiast, you’ve sure had the experience of sitting around waiting for a drink for 20 minutes, dying of thirst and sobriety because that extra eighth of an ounce of Maraschino liqueur or Green Chartreuse or Punt e Mes plus two different kinds of gin and three different kinds of bitters are what’s going to make all the difference in the glass.
The era of the 12-ingredient cocktail may not be coming to an end anytime soon, but some bartenders are aiming to simplify their drinks. Thanks to barmen like Thomas Waugh of Death & Co., the three-ingredient drink is making a comeback. Take, for example, his take on the 50/50 martini, which has been cropping up in cocktail dens all over town.
Incorporating 1 part Beefeater gin, 1 part Dolin Blanc, and 1 part Krogstad Aqua Vit, Waugh is calling his version the 1:1:1. (Although, technically, there’s a dash of Regan’s Orange Bitters in there, which makes a total of four ingredients.) We made the drink at home in no time at all. So, how did he come up with it?
“To be honest, the way that cocktail came about was me at home trying to put together a drink with the ingredients that I had lying around, which goes to show you how geeky I am with a bottle of Dolin Blanc and Krogstad Aqua Vit in my possession,” said Waugh. “I had been playing around with aqua vit, though, for quite a while. In fact, I’ve been through multiple bottles of aqua vit at home, and I like many of them–like the Linie aged stuff–but that particular one, due to its anise edge, really makes the drink pop.”
Have drinks gotten too complicated, or are we just incredibly impatient when it comes to quenching our thirst?
“I think that’s too-broad a question to answer simply. Drink culture, especially in big cities, has gotten to the point where people have forgotten what drinking out–or in, for that matter–is all about. Enjoying a simple pleasure, meeting people and having nice conversation, forgetting about your cares for a moment, lifting your spirits after a stressful day. Seems, nowadays, folks are just too darned focused and nitpicky about the little things, and don’t just do what they originally came to do… forget their troubles and have fun.”
1 oz Beefeater Gin (we used our new bottle of 24)
1 oz Krogstad Aqua Vit
1 oz Dolin Blanc Vermouth
1 dash Regan’s Orange Bitters
In a mixing glass combine the ingredients. Add lots of ice and stir. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. No garnish necessary.
