More Reactions to Paterson’s Lt. Gov Appointment.

Shelly Silver’s in! “I would like to extend my warmest congratulations and best wishes to Richard Ravitch (pictured) upon being named by Governor Paterson to the position of Lieutenant Governor,” he announces in a statement. The assembly speaker praises Ravitch’s “long and distinguished record of public service,” and is “hopeful that the Governor’s selection of Mr. Ravitch as Lieutenant Governor will help bring about an end to the Senate stalemate, and allow us all to move forward to address the many issues of importance to the people of the State of New York.”

The Working Families Party tweets, “Congratulations Ravitch – get our state back on track!” and more formally states, “This is a wise move by Governor Paterson to address New York’s month-old political crisis. Though legal questions remain, anything that gets the Senate to take up the people’s business again is a step in the right direction.”

Republican state senator George Winner of Elmira, as you might expect, reacts negatively: “Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has already ruled that any move to appoint a lieutenant governor would be unconstitutional, so why would Gov. Paterson ignore such a clear-cut opinion?… His actions will create more chaos and potentially derail an agreement we’re close to reaching on effective power sharing to get the Senate back to work.”

Pedro Espada says he’ll sue.
