“You’ll listen to it 100 times without realizing it,” goes the praise; yeah, exactly, goes the reasonable retort. The first track to emerge from Vivian Girls’ Everything Goes Wrong (out in September) won’t do much to alter their remarkably polarizing aura, but parsing very subtle shades of grey here, there’s just a bit more urgency to their standard distortion & reverb trash-pop overload — it his a little harder and lasts a little longer. Just a little. Both the devout love and the abject hate still confound me a bit, as I suspect both their mild supporters and detractors have it right: This is deep background music, pleasant and unobtrusive, on which you can project whatever you like, or nothing at all.
