Right after the San Francisco Chronicle broke the news this morning that Nate Appleman was leaving his post as executive chef at his restaurants A16 and SPQR to “explore what’s out there,” a rumor quickly surfaced that the James Beard Award-winning chef — known for his soulful, meaty takes on the foods of Italy’s Campania region — would be heading to our fair city. But while one New York chef told Grub Street San Francisco that Appleman is moving to New York, a rep for A16 said she “knew nothing of his plans,” and added that as far as A16 and SPQR are concerned, it’s business as usual: Liza Shaw will stay on as A16’s executive chef, while Christopher Behr will head SPQR. “The cooking’s the same, the experience is the same,” the rep said. Whether New Yorkers will soon get a taste of that experience remains to be seen.
