Gary War’s most striking innovation has been their off-kilter guitar delay, a gargling effect that plays like dub recorded beneath the East River. The strength of Blank Dogs’ Mike Sniper has been his signature ability to spin new-wave melodies into tattered, lo-fi tapestries where texture’s just as engaging as the pop song simmering below. So their collaborative Captured Tracks via Sacred Bones project Roman Soldiers fittingly sounds exactly like the two projects being thrown against a wall, like wet paint, with gravity doing the work. Sounds like there was a whole bunch of home studio time and back-and-forth media-firing, which is probably what actually happened. That, or they played some damaged Orange Juice track in reverse and called it a day.
