Last Thursday the Daily News‘ back cover told us in huge letters that the “Heat Is On” Roger Clemens and “Pressure on Rocket grows as grand jury subpoenas Houston gym owner, others.”
This was the latest “Daily News I-Team Exclusive” from Michael O’Keeffe, Christian Red, Teri Thompson, and Nathaniel Vinton.
Kelly Blair, owner of 1-On-1 Elite Personal Fitness center in Pasadena, Texas (which closed last year) was, the Daily News reporters said, subpoenaed to appear before the Washington grand jury investigating whether Clemens committed perjury when he testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in the winter of 2008. As it turned out, as reported by the same Daily News team on Sunday, Blair is only going to be of use in nailing a much smaller fish: Andy Pettitte.
“I am the trainer that was just recently subpoenaed by the FBI to appear in Washington. D.C. in the Rogers Clemens case,” Blair told reporters in Houston. “I have been falsely accused of being, or they suspect that I might be, the supplier in this situation … the truth is, and I just want to set the record straight … I did not supply Roger Clemens growth hormone.”
Blair did admit to supplying HGH to “A member of Andy Pettitte’s family,” but who cares? Pettitte long ago admitted to his HGH use. The major revelation in Blair’s statement is “I did not supply the Rocket Fuel.” Or at least that’s the way the headline that did not run in the Sunday edition should have read.
