Time to call it a tradition. For the last few years, the bassist has spent a week’s worth of evenings playing with different pianists—some old pals, some new acquaintances. The revolving door approach gently amends Haden’s signature rumination and, from Paul Bley’s skittish grace to Kenny Barron’s plush melodic sense to Bill Charlap’s crisp phrases, the revelations of variety carry the day. Warning: If Steve Kuhn is as poetically demonstrative as he was two weeks ago at Birdland, things could get rocking a bit.
