Shucking sustainable oysters from the rather obscenely named Widow’s Hole.
Yesterday afternoon from 4 p.m. till 8 p.m. commenced the first annual Good Beer festival, sponsored by Edible Brooklyn and several other organizations. The beer flowed freely (oddly poured into wine glasses) from such august micro-producers as Kelso, Ommegang, Smuttynose, Sly Fox, and Sixpoint, and a bartender from Gramercy Tavern dispensed his own porter homebrew, which was unexpectedly excellent, one of the highlights of the festival. Brews were matched with snacks, which were often of a meaty and substantial nature.
Porchetta tendered a miniature version of its eponymous sandwich; Beer Table offered decorated eggs to go with a sour German Gose; while Rose Water fielded a fluke-and-avocado ceviche marinate in Gueze. The beers and snacks were distinguished, and the eating and drinking was at a much higher level than the previous Edible Brooklyn festival at the same location, which focused on Long Island Wines, and provided many fewer eats.
