Gotta love Staten Island — even the golfers are contentious. Christopher DeMenna of Bay Terrace is suing Richmond County Country Club and the Staten Island Golf Association because they banned him from a tournament after he cursed out an official. In September 2007, it seems, DeMenna got into a beef with an official about a lost ball during that year’s Staten Island Amateur tournament. The official said he hadn’t found the ball within an allotted time period and had to tee off again. DeMenna “cursed the official and drove off the course” (presumably in a golf cart) says the Staten Island Advance. The Club banned him from the tournament for four years, which is a big deal, as DeMenna is a top local player and this year’s Staten Island Classic champ. He contends the Club maintains the ban “solely to keep his name off the champions’ plaque in the RCCC’s Grill Room”; also, that he’s been discriminated against he doesn’t belong to the Club, which he believes is calling the shots for the Association. If he wins, maybe Andrew Giuliani will call for a new trial over his expulsion from the Duke golf team. The Staten Island Amateur starts next week. Photo (cc) endbradley.
