Blanche Fury

(Marc Allégret, 1948).
Although directed by a visiting Frenchman, this florid Midlands Gothic is among the most British of movies—a Technicolor Bronte, with Valerie Hobson (fresh from Great Expectations) as a poor but feisty governess and swashbuckler Stewart Granger as a glowering bastard, swindled out of his inheritance and sworn to wreak vengeance.
