State Senate Approves Mayor Control of Schools; New Assembly Vote Needed

Five weeks after it expired, the state senate finally passed mayoral control today, 47-8. The new version comes with some amendments that give parents and district superintendents more input, so the Assembly, which passed an earlier version, with have to re-vote, but there seems to be no issue there. Senator Shirley Huntley, who doesn’t like how things were handled, took at shot at Senator Daniel Squadron during the session: “Listen to Senator Squadron… he seems to know so much about children, which is amazing since he’s barely an adult himself.” (Squadron is 30.)
