Flying Leathernecks


(Nicholas Ray, 1951).
Ray was under contract to RKO, and this World War II saga (made as the Cold War was escalating) was a studio assignment for which he had little taste. But it’s exciting enough, with Hollywood professionalism prevailing. John Wayne stars as a jingoistic disciplinarian marine squadron commander. The footage of aerial combat is first rate, as our guys go after the dastardly “Japs.”
