When he opens up the blinds, he lets the light shine through, yeah—and some controversy gets in there, too. Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, an enduring alt-hip-hop MC since his 1991 debut, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, cut ties with his cousin/producer Ice Cube after the album’s success (largely on the back of aggro single “Mistadobalina”) and went on to urge fans not to buy his own best-of compilation on Elektra, publicly scorning it as a cash-grab. Lately, Del’s laid-back rhymes have leaned to silky trip-hop (that’s him purring for “Clint Eastwood” in the Gorillaz, for one), but he’s as bluntly outspoken as ever. What’s that they say about not trusting anyone over 30? Well, “they” love Del. With Gravy Train!!!!, DD/MM/YYYY, and Kenan Bell.
