Whether dealing in whispers or whomps, the drummer’s ensembles usually make the kind of music that seems private, as if containing something they may or may not reveal. That makes all the textural ploys and design oddities that much more attractive—you really want to know what’s going on in the center of this stuff. This two-reeds, guitar, and rhythm section outfit is one of the last tastes of Hemingway we’’ll have for awhile; he’s moving to Switzerland in September.
