Bar Carrera Gets Its Basque On


Per the Strong Buzz, Ryan Bartlow, a former sous chef at Sam Mason’s Tailor, has taken over the kitchen at Bar Carrera. He’ll be giving the restaurant’s small plates menu something of a make-over, incorporating more “ambitious” Spanish fare that reflects his training in San Sebastian. Bartlow’s dishes, like prawns a la plancha and fish soup with red mullet donosti-style, will mean more Basque cooking for the city. Though Euskadi has been serving Basque food for years on East 4th Street, the cuisine flew under the general radar until last November, when Alex Raij and Eder Montero’s Txikito introduced a wider audience to the pleasures of lekak, boquerones, and epic consonants.
