In this dark and clammy classic thriller Clouzot painstakingly establishes the solid realistic setting of a shabby provincial private school and builds suspense nicely, then dissipates it somewhat with a grand guignol climax that taxes credibility. Still, it’s a justly-famous crowd-pleaser, with Simone Signoret in top form.
