The Cool Kids

Viva la 1988 revivalism! Though it was the year MC Mikey Rocks was born, it doesn’t stop Chicago duo the Cool Kids from completing hip-hop revisionist history. More De La Soul nerd suburbia than Tupac gangsta thug, Rocks and MC Chuck Inglish rep fish frys and Darkwing Duck on their MySpace-friendly rhymes. Though the fate of debut LP When Fish Ride Bicycles has been pushed back to late December, content yourself with the great Don Cannon-produced Gone Fishing mixtape. It’s worth it for the lackadaisical “Jump Rope,” which crosschecks summer jobs, smoking blunts, and “h-e-double hockey sticks” with dope suburban angst. Prince Paul would approve.
