Booze News: Moonshine Makes a Comeback; Drinking Fights Dementia


Brown-Forman, the maker of Jack Daniel’s, Southern Comfort, and Fetzer wine, has reported a bigger-than-expected 38 percent climb in fiscal first-quarter earnings after making big cost cuts. The company reduced its work force by 6 percent in response to consumers cutting back on drinking.

Writer Tony Sachs praises the simplicity of the gin and tonic: “No need to infuse whole boysenberries into your booze for two months before you make a cocktail. Just take some gin, some tonic water, some ice and a lime wedge, pour and enjoy.”

A large review of studies reveals that people over 60 who drink moderately have a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Compared with abstainers, male drinkers reduced their risk by 45 percent, and women by 27 percent.

Moonshine is making a comeback. Unfortunately, distilling homemade spirits is a felony. But then, that’s probably part of the reason it’s made a comeback in the first place. Enthusiasts make moonshine out of everything from meal to fruit to doughnuts.
