Charles Spearin’s Happiness Project is nothing if not self-fulfilling; it’s one of the most uplifting, awe-inspiring concerts I’ve ever seen. The premise: singer/songwriter Spearin, of massive Canadian enclaves Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say Think, interviewed his neighbors and friends about the concept of happiness, then turned the tonalities of their voices into music. Sometimes, this evolves into a call-and-response of full sentences to lithe jazz saxophone; in other cases, he splices apart syllables into one vowel, and morphs that into one note and, ultimately, a densely packed samba. And through it all, the giddiness of creativity is infectious. Part of the hipper-than-hip Wordless Music Series; with Do Make Say Think.
