It’s only a matter of time before someone makes a dance piece about the sorely missed young actor Heath Ledger, but until then, we’ll sate ourselves with Last Meadow, inspired by the film work of another actor who died tragically young—James Dean. His entire oeuvre consists of three films, but in those (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant), Dean solidified a unique and still-resonant on-screen persona. In Last Meadow, Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People create a reflection on Dean’s image and his status as an American icon.
