Early on the morning of Labor Day, Matthew Dugan was walking in the Whitehall Staten Island Ferry terminal in Manhattan with his girlfriend when she slipped and fell. A group of people laughed at this, angering Dugan. This led to a verbal confrontation, as a result of which two men and a woman beat Dugan, a New York City firefighter, leaving him with critical injuries, including swelling of the brain, for which he has been treated at New York Downtown Hospital. Police are studying surveillance video from the terminal, and Dugan’s fellow firefighters are looking in on him at the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition after two operations. His girlfriend was uninjured.
