Watching this Brooklyn band play unplugged, as they’ll do tonight, at first seems utterly besides the point: Asobi Seksu are known for their layers (and layers) of post-shoegaze guitars, not for their folky ruminations on, say, the virtue of an honest day’s work. Yet as they demonstrated on a lovely acoustic album they recorded last year at London’s Olympic Studios, singer Yuki Chikudate and guitarist James Hanna are actually solid little tunesmiths with a firm grasp on the art of the hook; there’s more going on in Asobi Seksu’s songs than at first appears to be the case. They’ve been selling the acoustic disc at shows for most of this year, but tonight’s gig previews Polyvinyl’s official release in November.
