The Jean-Michel Pilc Trio

There’s more than a bit of the dervish in the pianist, whose music dances with equal parts abandon and control. The latter has always been the most impressive part of his gambits; he’s long loved to tilt on a precipice, but he never seems to go “splat.” This weekend’s lifeline may very well be drummer Billy Hart; a few weeks ago, I watched him get his Connie Kay on by hushing a crowd with just a few strokes of the high-hat, demonstrating the role that grace and nuance will always have in creative music.
