Our Man Sietsema on New York’s Hot Dog History

Since he is far too modest to do it himself, let us call your attention to Our Man Sietsema’s cover story in this month’s Edible Manhattan. It’s a fascinating screed on the long history of the hot dog in New York City, and our favorite passage explains how the frankfurter arrived at its more canine name:

Folklore has it that sketch artist Tad Dorgan heard vendors at New York’s Polo Grounds–Harlem home of the New York Giants baseball team–hawking franks in 1902 by yelling, “Hot dachshund sausages!” Not knowing how to spell “dachshund,” he referred to them as “hot dogs” in an editorial cartoon published in The New York Journal, a coinage that became predominant across the country.
