As a summer filled with sadness finally comes to a close, NYC’s DJ elite are rallying around one of their own: Tonight’s weekly Journey party at Santos’ Party House, hosted by DJ Spinna and Giant Step, will serve as a benefit for DJ Kon, who’s been hospitalized for the past several weeks with an unspecified illness. (His blog provides some details, and they’re not pretty.)
Credited by his peers as one of the most devoted beat-diggers around, Kon is best known from his work alongside DJ Amir as the duo Kon and Amir, known for their impeccable taste in rare grooves, as flaunted by the On Track and Off Track album series. Sick and struggling in the hospital, Kon is also now in a bad spot financially. “As you could probably guess, most DJs are independent contractors who do not have access to affordable health insurance,” says friend and fellow DJ Cosmo Baker. “I learned the hard way 10 years ago when I was in a car accident and had to spend several months in the hospital. I didn’t have coverage at the time, and my bills were several hundred thousands dollars. I was out of work, could not spin for a long time, so I had no benefits or coverage to take care of me. Thankfully, through my dear friends and the community of Philadelphia, a benefit was thrown that raised enough money for me to get back on my feet. Hopefully we can do the same for our friend Kon here.”
The Santos event boasts an all-star local-DJ lineup including Baker, Amir, Rich Medina, Eli Escobar, and DJ Scratch spin with 100 percent of the night’s profits going towards Kon’s recovery. With a $10 suggested donation at the door (a cover typical of less-worthy lineups), this is a no-brainer for those out on the town tonight.
