Wintour Commands You to Shop! Fashion Week Launches with “Fashion’s Night Out”

As Anna Wintour goes, so goes the nation: today marks the start of Fashion Week, and tonight the first Fashion’s Night Out, the Vogue empress’s glam plan to get the bodies back in the stores. Over 300 retailers citywide will extend their hours until 11pm to host live music, celebrities, and of course, discounts on their wares.

Wintour herself will grace her magazine’s pop-up store at the Queens Center Mall (!) to sign t-shirts and, presumably, give exclusive advice on wearing sunglasses indoors…

Events are free and open to the public. As Wintour writes in her September issue Letter from the Editor: “Fashion’s Night Out is Vogue‘s response to the notion that in these challenging times, certain kinds of pleasure, such as shopping, are impermissible. I believe that on the contrary, this is exactly the moment to insist on the harmless (and in fact economically beneficial) joys of being out and about and open to inspiration. Stores are fun, even if you’re not going to buy anything.”

But of course you will; she’s watching you. Some of the evening’s highlights:

  • Brazilian party, complete with caipirinhas, at Carlos Miele (408 W. 14th St.)
  • Kate Hudson plus a vegetarian food truck at Stella McCartney (429 W. 14th St.)
  • Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen manning the bar at Barney’s (660 Madison Ave.)
  • Kid Cudi listening session at A Bathing Ape (91 Greene St.)
  • Rodarte and Proenza Schouler trunk shows, out of literal car trunks, at Opening Ceremony (35 Howard St.)
  • DJ Alexandra Richards at French Connection (435 West Broadway)
