French metal band Gojira’s moniker is the Japanese word we Americanized into “Godzilla,” and they play big, nasty, sci-fi-inspired epics that live up to their namesake. As they underscore on their albums—especially their latest, The Way of All Flesh—Gojira are masters of extremism, whether it’s playing nuanced, scaly, quiet pseudo-riffs or meat-and-potatoes fire-breathers, both of which make for an exciting live experience. Better yet, at their concerts there are few between-song banter breaks because frontman Joe Duplantier speaks little English, making for one impressive, crushing marathon of proggy-yet-accessible death metal.
