New York may have just played host to the world’s most profligate waste of cream pies, but an increasing number of people in the city can’t afford to buy groceries. According to a report from Crain’s, about 90 percent of the Food Bank for New York City’s member organizations are reporting an increase in the number of people seeking their services. Over half the organizations have seen a 25 percent rise in demand over the past year. The need for assistance is most pronounced among seniors who have lost their savings in the recession, a situation exacerbated by a decline in charitable giving and a lack of adequate resources at many food banks. So although the city government has been working to make food policy more of a priority, there’s a long way to go until vision in any way resembles reality.
