The drummer has always threaded a bit of silliness into his fiery free bop, so don’t be surprised when you come across that YouTube clip of him making a carrot smoothie while simultaneously wielding sticks and cymbals—he just likes to juice up his music. But he’s ultra-serious about the depth of improvisation that defines his work, and one reason the new That’s Gonna Leave a Mark is smelling like one of 2009’s best CDs is because its sax exchanges and rhythmic elÃ n are so consistent. The other? It swings like a fothermucker, bouncing even when it’s bruising.
