It is a heroic venture to provide forums for all the intrepid new souls making dents on the jazz scene. The first week of this engaging annual event has done exactly that, and the three-night conclusion smells just as strong. From Pete Robbins’ hard-charging trio to Jackson Moore’s three-drummer septet to Taylor Ho Bynum’s groove-slanted Postive Catastrophe little big band, subtle varieties of postmodern swing will be in the air. Duos have a place, too. The hook-up between trumpeter Amir ElSaffar and saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh will blend Iraqi and Iranian sensibilities, and the ongoing collabo of percussionist John Hollenbeck and vocalist Theo Bleckmann will be a study in surprise. Even vets are bringing the new(ish): Tim Berne’s los totopos outfit performs a seldom-heard suite by Julius Hemphill that should be a pip.
