When I was a kid, there was one kind of potato, and it was called “potato.” At this season, potato shoppers at local farmers markets will happen upon a bewildering number of varieties, each with unique perfect uses. You can even get Russett potatoes, which is the most common type in the U.S.
But they don’t come cheap: most potatoes are priced from $1.50 to $3.00 per pound.
At Paffenroth Gardens, from Warwick, NY, a 19 year veteran of the farmers markets in the city, a whopping 17 varieties of potato were counted this afternoon.
There were Ozette fingerlings and French fingerlings…
And potatoes with ridiculous names like Romance…
and La Ratte.
Even the carrots are colorful at Paffenroth.
