Dir. George Marshall (1946).
This postwar noir, based on an original screenplay by Raymond Chandler, stars Alan Ladd as a war veteran who returns home and finds his wife unfaithful—and murdered—and he’s accused of the crime. Ladd does a bang-up job in this stylish thriller. It’s being shown as part of a special event—”Chandleresque: Raymond Chandler on film and television”—which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the great crime writer’s death and includes an illustrated talk by Adrian Wooton chronicling Changler’s life and career.
