The Roots Are In A New York State of Mind

We can’t help but notice that the ace new video to the so-far sole single from the Roots’ forthcoming How I Got Over seems to have been shot in a place that looks a lot like Brooklyn. The streets, we suppose, are universal, but where’s the hometown pride? North Philadelphia was just too ugly to put on film? (Misplaced) Regional indignation aside, this song continues to get better–the transition of Black Thought from exhausted rapper to Curtis Mayfield can’t happen quickly enough. Although we can wait quite a while should Questlove choose to continue drumming rather than, say, becoming an umbrella-wielding junkie chess player, as he does here. [On Smash]
