Just as it did after Kurt Cobain wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the cover of Daniel Johnston‘s album Hi, How Are You, the art-pop eccentric’s career received a boost in 2006 as a result of The Devil and Daniel Johnston, Jeff Feuerzeig’s award-winning documentary. And now Johnston has a new album out that’s set to become his highest-profile record since 1994’s Fun, the grunge-years major-label effort he made with Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers. Power-pop whiz Jason Falkner produced Is and Always Was; the sound is bigger and brighter than on most of Johnston’s earlier records (including Fun), which somehow both downplays and emphasizes the singer’s childlike charm.
