This beautiful semi-autobiographical movie—India’s first film in CinemaScope—traces the dissolution of a film director, played by Dutt. The picture’s loving depiction of filmmaking takes us behind the scenes at the studio with visually stunning chiaroscuro images of the huge sound stages where the doomed metteur-en-scene lives and dies.
