Ticket of No Return

Dir. Ulrike Ottinger (1979).
A glacially beautiful clothes horse comes to Berlin to “fulfill her destiny as a drunk.” Teaming up with a local bag lady, she goes barhopping—a new, outrageous outfit in each scene. Ottinger stages the increasingly fragmented proceedings with great verve. This is the funniest, most formally inventive, and totally befuddled attack on demon run since D.W. Griffith’s swan song, The Struggle.
