A week ago, a story emerged that Les Desirs Patisserie, the 47-year-old Chelsea bakery beloved by neighborhood seniors, was about to be closed by its landlords and replaced by a branch of Sullivan Street Bakery. A petition to save the bakery collected some 700 signatures. But now the landlord is weighing in; it seems that Les Desirs’s owner, Jean Pauget, had planned to retire and then changed his mind. Still, who likes the idea of senior citizens being forced to go to McDonald’s because they can’t afford anything else in the neighborhood?
