— Kanye West did not manage to appear at last night’s BET Awards, despite being nominated for nine awards. Is this news? More so, apparently, than any of the awards themselves, which went to some people, who rap. Allegedly. Meanwhile, Hip Hop Wired comes through with the bold theory that Yeezy’s in India, claiming that the rapper “is taking some time out now for a religious retreat to reassess his life at a Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, a small coastal town in South India.” As always, true or not, this is man who is three joke-moves ahead of you at all times.
–Busta Rhymes, the Diggin in the Crates Crew, the X-ecutioners, and A-Trak are set to pay tribute to fallen DJ champ Roc Raida at B.B. Kings on October 22. All proceeds will go to Roc Raida’s widow, Tyeasha Williams, and their children. For those that can’t make it, there is another option: donating directly to the DJ’s wife via PayPal at email@example.com, according to AllHipHop.com. The show is also part of CMJ’s Music Marathon.
–Lightning Bolt’s new Earthly Delights is out on Load tomorrow. It’s a record that fulfills all sorts of long held prophecies about the band, which is only to say it’s weird and challenging and counter-intuitive but still epic, and not at all the jock-jams-for-noise-heads thing that the duo occasionally seemed on the verge of making. Fader has “Flooded Chamber” streaming over at their site. The band is back in NYC on October 30th, playing Bushwick’s Above the Auto Parts Store.
