Gregory Peck poses as a Jew to do a magazine piece on anti-Semitism and finds there’s quite a bit of it out there in Kazan’s screen version of Laura Hobson’s novel. Tame, dated and muddled, with a leaden visual style, it doesn’t look like the major work nearly everyone called it in 1947. Kazan copped a Best Director Oscar for the picture, but had this to say of it: “It reminds me of the illustrations in ladies’ magazines in those days. I mean, those people don’t shit. It’s good stage direction. I’m not particularly fond of it. I was awful glad when it got over.”
