Each in its own way, and rooted as much in acoustic Grateful Dead as in Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, Boulder’s Yonder Mountain String Band and New Jersey’s Railroad Earth together represent the apex of contemporary improvised bluegrass. They each pick inventively, croon compellingly, and perform their high lonesome hearts out. With hilarious songs about junkies and pizza logic, solo banjo man Danny Barnes is the perfect corrective to all that fussy Steve Martin crap.
