He spent the summer touring the globe with a double trio—yep, two bassists and two drummers—and at the gigs I caught, his keening horn seemed to be thrilled by the prospect of all that interplay. Now the saxophone hero has pared it down to a single rhythm section (bassist Matt Penman and percussionist Greg Hutchinson), but there will probably still be plenty of action on the stand. Redman’s authoritative these days, and he’s taught his team how to keep lots of balls in the air at once. I don’t need to tell you about the advantages of a small venue, right?
