The San Francisco clarinetist’s work has seemed more thoughtful than playful, but the tunes and trajectory on the new Go Home prove two things: One needn’t negate the other, and it’s always time to raise a little sand. Buoyant syncopation is the liftoff pad for guitarist Charlie Hunter’s dust storms and trumpeter Ron Miles’ warm winds. The boss’s straight horn is both pearly and provocative, and this stretch of gigs, which subs trombonist Curtis Fowlkes for Miles, is a chance to see how an artistic persona can be widened in one fell swoop. Keep your ear on drummer Scott Amendola.
