There was a mid-summer flush of saxophone trio records this year, but somehow the tenor player’s enchanting One, Two, Three didn’t receive the buzz awarded to some of its high-vis competitors. Shame, really. Sabbagh’s dry tone, lilting lines, and fun songbook was a kick, and seeing his group in action is sure to make the music that much more vivid. From “Boo Boo’s Birthday” to “Chelsea Bridge,” there’s a deep drive and runaway lyricism in the center of these performances. Drummer Bill Stewart is on the job tonight, and he leaves the motor running.
