He once had an overly earnest vibe that occasionally nudged me away from the trumpeter’s work. But in the past few years, Harrell’s loosened some emotional strings and an array of feels now populates his music. Last time he took his quintet to the famous basement, working the material from this year’s mercurial Prana Dance, he boasted a controlled informality. That’s a bandstand demeanor I’d watch forever—especially when the collective chops are so deep.
