For the past six years, Chicago’s Numero Group have acted as pop archeologists (and sometimes anthropologists) with their Eccentric Soul discs, excavating and reissuing obscure discographies from Columbus’s Capsoul to, most notably, their hometown Twinight label. With the success of the series and so many original musicians still living, a tour was inevitable. Backed by Chicago’s JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, the label’s Eccentric Soul Revue is, in some ways, an old-fashioned package tour. Starring Twinight’s Syl Johnson and Renaldo Domino (who slayed in May at Fort Greene’s Five Spot), in other ways, it’s not old-fashioned at all. It’s just wonderful.
