Call this Metallica’s victory lap. The headbanging legends released a lauded return-to-metal form in Death Magnetic last year, mostly making up for being so teary-eyed in their Some Kind of Monster doc. This year, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and, just a couple of weeks ago, they participated in that foundation’s star-studded benefit concert, inviting Ozzy, the Kinks’ Ray Davies, and even Lou Reed—who actually appeared to be having (gasp!) fun—to play their respective hits. To end the year on top, Metallica are returning for their first headlining appearance at the Garden in 12 years, and they’re bringing two metal bands near the top of their game with them: Virginia thrashers Lamb of God, who are celebrating 15 years as a band, recall Metallica’s ‘80s angry best, and Danes Volbeat, who have released three records of catchy rockabilly-influenced metal. This is Metallica’s Hall of Fame.
