Nestle Wants to Play Nutritionist


Nestle no longer wants to be synonymous only with yellow bags of chocolate chips and milk powder scandals: according to an article in the Economist, the corporation is trying to become “the world’s leading health, nutrition and ‘wellness’ firm.” The shift comes from evidence that “functional foods” that have been modified to provide purported health benefits are enjoying growing popularity in wealthy countries. Nestle hopes to increase its sales by selling products beefed up with such ingredients as “live bacteria in yogurt, extra calcium of a form that is more easily absorbed by children’s bodies, and sterols (a kind of plant fat) that reduce blood cholesterol.” Presumably, breast-feeding Third World mothers aren’t part of the company’s target demographic.
