Brooklynites are lucky to have their own bourbon bar. Now, American whiskey buffs will be able get their fix near Union Square, where a new rye-centric bar is opening. With Raines Law Room just down the street, West 17th Street could have the makings of a mini cocktail crawl.
A walk down West 17th this past weekend revealed the soft opening of Rye House, the new whiskey bar/gastropub by the owners of Sala. Chef Greg Johnson turns out such small plates as Smoked Trout Puffs and Buffalo Sweetbreads, alongside a menu of local and craft beers, and a cocktail list designed by Lynnette Marrero (formerly of Freemans, Elettaria, and currently president of LUPEC), and Jim Kearns (also of Freemans). Rye and other brown liquors are the focus, but American spirits of every shade are featured. Doors open Tuesday.
